Bonnie Makes Her Case

At lunch, Bonnie and the Bear Detectives chose a corner table across the room from where Brother and Bermuda sat gazing into each other’s eyes.

“All right, Bonnie,” said Cousin Fred. “The first thing we have to do is decide whether or not to take the case. Why should we investigate Bermuda McBear?”

Bonnie told the Bear Detectives about Bermuda meeting Cool at the Burger Bear the night before.

“That stinks!” said Lizzy.

“Sure, it stinks,” said Sister. “But all it means is that Bermuda is a rotten two-timer. What’s there to investigate?”

“I’m getting to that,” said Bonnie. “Two days ago Bermuda asked Queenie who this month’s principal’s aide is. And yesterday she was all over Brother.”

“You mean she’s only interested in Brother because he’s the principal’s aide?” said Sister.

“Exactly,” said Bonnie. “And Brother is taking her along on his rounds this afternoon.”

“Hmm,” said Fred. “That sounds pretty suspicious. I wonder what she’s after?”

“Well, let’s try to figure it out,” said Bonnie. “What does the principal’s aide have that other cubs don’t?”

The cubs thought as they ate lunch. After a while, Lizzy said, “Brother has the principal’s aide badge he got from Mr. Honeycomb.”

“Oh, right,” said Sister. “Bermuda’s after his badge. Get serious, Lizzy.”
